Over the last seven months, as I’ve researched the use of virtual reality (VR) to support learning and explored its potential with numerous L&D professionals, it’s been really encouraging to see the focus expand from subject areas such as health and safety and employee on-boarding (always a sound starting point) to how VR could be used to support behavioural change programmes.
In part this stems from the power of VR to deliver the concept of “presence”, which – in fact – I maintain should be one of the primary drivers for choosing a VR option.
“Presence” is the sense of becoming someone else, being somewhere else, or interacting with something that’s not actually there.
It’s also down to the fact that the use of 360° video – one of the most straightforward means of getting started with VR – offers a lot of scope to deliver an appropriate immersive experience to support this type of training. What happens after a piece of training should never be left to chance, but so often it is. I make no apology for periodically bringing out my soap box to talk about this. I also call this our industry’s “Achilles heel”. When survey after survey reveals how our profession still wants that seemingly illusive seat at the top table, we need to acknowledge that if we could demonstrate how our learning made an impact, we’d be in a much stronger bargaining position. I’ve recently had a number of interesting conversations about whether micro-learning – one of this year’s big talking points – could really support behavioural change training. Most people seemed comfortable that it would be good for pure knowledge transfer, but questioned whether it would support behavioural change, where typically we’ve invested in more complete and deeper programmes of learning, be that online or in the classroom.
